Where Craftsmanship Takes Shape
Behind every Prop & Pine creation is a week-long journey of craftsmanship. Premium hardwoods are carefully selected, milled, joined, shaped, sanded, and finished by hand to reveal the natural beauty of each piece. Inspired by the precision and attention to detail found in business aviation, our process transforms raw hardwood into heirloom-quality serving trays and boards that are as functional as they are beautiful.

Hand-Selected Hardwoods
Every Prop & Pine piece begins long before the first cut is made. We work with a carefully selected hardwood supplier in the Northeastern United States known for sourcing some of the finest domestic and exotic lumber available. Rather than purchasing wood in bulk, we personally evaluate and select individual boards based on grain character, color consistency, figure, stability, and overall beauty.
Each species—whether Walnut, Maple, White Oak, Mahogany, Purpleheart, or another premium hardwood—is chosen for its unique character and suitability for the final piece. We carefully inspect every board for grain flow, natural variation, and visual appeal, often sorting through dozens of candidates to find those worthy of becoming a Prop & Pine creation.
This deliberate selection process ensures that every tray and board begins with exceptional raw material. No two pieces of wood are identical, and we embrace those natural distinctions, allowing the character of each hardwood to influence the final design. By starting with the finest lumber available, we create pieces that are not only beautiful today, but designed to be admired and enjoyed for generations.

Revealing the Grain
Once the selected hardwoods have been milled and prepared, they are carefully cut into precise strips and arranged for the first glue-up. This stage marks the beginning of the transformation from raw lumber into a future heirloom piece.
For many of our serving trays and boards, the strips are rotated to expose the edge grain—the dense, beautifully patterned side of the wood that showcases its natural character and strength. Each strip is individually inspected and positioned to create a balanced flow of grain, color, and texture across the entire surface.
The arrangement process is both technical and artistic. Subtle variations in tone, grain movement, and figure are intentionally considered to create a cohesive and visually striking composition. Once the layout meets our standards, the pieces are carefully glued, aligned, and clamped under pressure, where they begin their journey toward becoming a single, unified work of craftsmanship.
This foundational glue-up establishes the beauty, durability, and character that will define the finished Prop & Pine piece.

The End-Grain Transformation
After the initial glue-up has cured, the panel undergoes one of the most important stages in the entire process. The board is carefully crosscut into uniform sections, with each piece precisely measured to maintain consistency throughout the final design.
These sections are then individually rotated 90 degrees, exposing the end grain—the cross-section of the wood fibers. This reveals the intricate natural patterns hidden within the hardwood and creates the distinctive checkerboard appearance that makes end-grain boards so highly sought after.
Beyond its visual appeal, end grain is revered for its exceptional durability. Often referred to as the "working face" of the wood, the fibers absorb impact more effectively and provide a surface that is both resilient and remarkably beautiful. The process requires meticulous attention to alignment, grain direction, and pattern continuity, ensuring each segment contributes to a seamless final composition.
Once arranged, every block is carefully aligned and glued together in a second glue-up, transforming dozens of individual pieces into a single surface that showcases the hardwood's natural beauty from an entirely new perspective. It is at this stage that the unmistakable character of a Prop & Pine end-grain piece truly begins to emerge.

Precision Inlay & CNC Craftsmanship
With the board fully cured and surfaced, it moves into one of the most technologically advanced stages of our process. While Prop & Pine is rooted in traditional craftsmanship, we have invested heavily in professional-grade CNC technology to achieve a level of precision that would be impossible through hand tools alone.
Every custom logo, tail number, name, monogram, and aviation-inspired design begins as a digital model that is meticulously engineered for the specific hardwood being used. Using advanced CAD/CAM software and precision CNC machining, we create exact toolpaths measured in thousandths of an inch, ensuring every cut is executed with exceptional accuracy.
For our signature hardwood inlays, the process becomes even more demanding. A matching pocket is first machined into the board, followed by a separately crafted inlay cut from a contrasting hardwood. The male and female components must fit together with extraordinary precision—often requiring tolerances tighter than the thickness of a sheet of paper. Every angle, depth, and dimension is carefully calibrated to create a seamless mechanical fit between the two pieces.
Once completed, the inlay is bonded into place and becomes a permanent part of the board itself—not a surface engraving, decal, or fill material. This method allows the design to become fully integrated into the hardwood, creating a refined appearance that can withstand years of use while showcasing the natural beauty of contrasting wood species.
The result is a level of customization and detail that reflects the same commitment to precision, craftsmanship, and engineering found throughout the world of business aviation.

Hand-Sanding & Surface Refinement
Once the inlay work is complete, each piece enters one of the most labor-intensive phases of the entire process. The board is carefully surfaced and hand-sanded through multiple stages to create a perfectly smooth, seamless finish.
During this process, excess material from the inlay is gradually removed until the contrasting hardwoods become perfectly flush with one another. Every surface, edge, corner, and detail is meticulously refined, revealing the crisp lines of the inlay and the natural beauty of the grain beneath.
Rather than rushing to the finish line, we progress through increasingly finer abrasives, eliminating even the smallest imperfections while enhancing the depth, figure, and character of the wood. This stage often requires multiple inspections under varying light conditions to ensure the surface meets our standards before any finish is applied.
By the end of this process, the hardwood feels exceptionally smooth to the touch, the inlay appears seamlessly integrated into the board, and the piece is ready for the finishing treatments that will protect and enhance it for years to come.

Finishing, Inspection & Ready for Departure
The final stage of our process is where craftsmanship, protection, and presentation come together. Each piece is carefully cleaned, inspected, and prepared for its finishing treatment, ensuring every surface highlights the natural beauty of the hardwood while providing lasting durability.
Multiple coats of premium food-safe oils and conditioners are applied by hand, allowing the wood to absorb nourishment deep within its fibers. This process enriches the grain, enhances contrast between species, and creates the warm, luxurious appearance that defines a Prop & Pine piece. Between applications, each board is allowed to cure properly before receiving additional attention and final buffing.
Before a piece is approved for shipment, it undergoes a detailed inspection where every edge, surface, inlay, engraving, and finish is reviewed against our standards. We verify that the craftsmanship, fit, and presentation reflect the level of quality our customers expect.
Once approved, the finished board or tray is carefully packaged and prepared for its journey. Inspired by the attention to detail found throughout business aviation, every shipment is treated as a final delivery of craftsmanship—ensuring it arrives ready to be displayed, gifted, entertained with, and enjoyed for years to come.
From a hand-selected hardwood board in the Northeast to a finished heirloom-quality piece, every Prop & Pine creation represents days of craftsmanship, precision, and an unwavering commitment to excellence.
By the end of this process, the hardwood feels exceptionally smooth to the touch, the inlay appears seamlessly integrated into the board, and the piece is ready for the finishing treatments that will protect and enhance it for years to come.
